Fourteen high school students in Johnston, Rhode Island were suspended from school last week for recording a hip-hop album that administrators deemed vulgar and violent, according to the Associated Press. The students each received a five-day suspension and are required to perform community service and receive in-school sensitivity training once they return from their punishment. The group sold 50 copies of the album, which featured lines like “I just wanna grab the Glock and cock it back / kill everyone here, how ... is that,” before concerned parents contacted school officials. A first amendment attorney said of the situation: “School officials have a much stronger claim to jurisdiction even though the materials were created off-campus.” A report by the school superintendent is due this week.

I don't agree with the punishment these children received for making that type of music but I also don't agree with the lyrics they decided to write. At that age, children shouldn't be thinking about grabbing glocks and busting shots. Whether it was a joke or whatever, the lyrics should have been a bit more age appropriate since they were selling it on campus to classmates. As for a five day suspension, thats way out of line. The community service and inschool training should have been the punishment.

Re: 14 High school students suspended for rap lyrics

it's true, it's a violation of the first amendment, but look at it like this... isn't it illegal to say the word "bomb" at an airport or on a plane?

people just took it as a threat... just tryint to look at early warnings... i do believe the punishment may have been outta line, but they were correct to take a look at the situation a little closer... cuz while those type of lyrics are very common in the rap industry (a little TOO common) that shouldn't be distributed in a school like that... coulda been another Columbine in the making, so yeah, i say, take a closer look....

LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, DO YOU SEE IT NOW??? this is what happens when all you put emphasis on is drugs, money, guns, and bitches....you tell the next generation that "you ain't shit unless you a killer who fucks and smacks hos and sell drugs" and guess what?? THEY END UP FUCKING BELIEVING IT..... I'm not sayin we have to be super-righteous role models.... but we have to be AWARE of what we're saying.....we have to DO THINGS DIFFRENTLY in order to make things diffrent..... you don't watch a movie 14 times hoping the ending will change right??? so then why say the same shit for 14 songs and expect changes for the better within our communities???....it's fucking RIDICULOUS....I hate being right when it comes to shit like this.....BE EASY-1-
