Since it was first held as a tribute to Albert "Uncle Al" Moss, the influential DJ, producer, and mainstay of the Miami hip-hop scene before his tragic murder in 2001, the Peace in the Hood Festival has become an annual tradition, an all-too-necessary celebration of the power of music in an often-difficult environment.

"

The Miami hip-hop disc jockey was shot to death when he answered the door of a duplex home he shared with another D-J. Al Moss, who came to fame as "Uncle Al" and "Uncle Peace" while working at a WEDR 99.1 FM radio station with rapper Luther Campbell. A friend says Moss was shot to death by mistake. Roderick Lee says the gunmen were actually looking for the other disc jockey at the home. Moss was shot on Monday, September 10, 2001, just 1 day before the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and the airplane crash in Phillidelphia. Police say they heard the report about the mistaken identity but haven't been able to confirm it. Police say they have been unable to track down the other disc jockey. There were reports he had been operating a pirate hip-hop radio station from his apartment, and that his station was interfering with the signal from another radio station, a pirate reggae station.

This year 8Ball & MJG gave a stunning performance along with Jickie-O, The Boss Lady from Humble Thugs, Kedash, Lil' Bass, Baby 380 and many more local artists took to the stage to keep the crowd going all day and well into the night. The DJ staff of WEDR 99.1 FM radio including Super Cindy, K. Foxx, DJ Khaled, and the PD Cedrick Hollywood put in an appearance to thank every one for such a great turn out.
