Miami’s late-night airwaves, definitely have a new king charge. It’s no other than DJ Tony Tone! Born and raised in Hell’s Kitchen and now at da bottom, in our Magic City! This dude has been on his grind for a minute and has earned his way on to the throne. 305hiphop.com was able to bring you an exclusive interview during one of his late night sessions.
Thanks for taking you time to interview with 305hiphop.com. Introduce yourself let them know who you are.
Its DJ Tony Tone reppin' Power 96 and Video Mix TV. Big shoot-outs to 305hiphop.com doing it real big.
So, how did ya get your name?
I went from like three different names I went from DJ Express, to DJ Tony, and then one day I just decided that we need a name that could be catchy, and it can stay in people’s mind, so we said Tony Tone.
When did you first realize that you wanted to become a DJ?
I use to rap believe it or not before I DJ’ed, so I used to DJ and rap at the same time, then I got to the club circuit and just decided that’s what I wanted to do.
That’s cool how long have you been grindin’?
For about 15 years at least, you knew me when I was nobody girl.
Yeah we go back. Oldschool.
I go back to the Charlie Brown days. But I was doing it back in the days from 609…609 I got to give them a lot of props. Everyone use to go out there.
The one on the beach, or the grove?
Both of them.
Are there any other aspects, in music, that you would like to get into?
Well I’m producing; I got a couple of artists that I’m working on. Me, I’m sticking to the Radio right now and TV, cause that’s my next step. As soon as I’m done DJing, I’m gonna keep doing Radio and TV.
That’s good. Who are some of the artists that you’ve worked with?
I worked with everybody. Right now Kanye, Chase, Pharell, Scott Storch, there are so many artists that I’ve worked with here cause of the radio station, and I get along with (the artists). And I’ve dropped so many mix tapes now, that, I think the closest people that I’ve really gotten close to is Lil’ Jon and Luda. I think those are the two top closest guys that I keep in contact with.
Is there anyone that you haven’t worked with that you would like to work with?
Actually my main concerns are with Jay-Z and Kanye, cause I’m a Rockafella for life. And when I finally got to do it, it was great doing it with him. It was because he is just a good MC. When I worked with them, and I did a two-week tour with Kanye for his album. It was great. For me, that was a big shiny thing. I tried not to show it but it was.
What ‘bout mixtapes, do you have any out?
I will hook you guys up. I came out with Mix Masters 1, 2, and 3. Which was featuring DJ Def, and me, which you guys already interviewed him for 305hiphop.com. I got him on the mix masters CDs. This year 2006 we are dropping an album, not a mix CD, an album. Def is going to be singing, and I’m going to come back rapping. Believe it or not Def got a voice.
Yeah, I’ve heard him on the radio at night on his show.
I can flow, I can free style, I’ve just kept it to myself. That’s why I have such a good voice on the radio on the microphone, when I do my shows at the club. People tell me they like my voice its because I used to rap…since I used to rap, the microphone is nothing to me. Right now the mixtapes where at the underground records stores what we will do is hook up 305hiphop.com with a lot of CDs so you guys can just go to the website and pick them up.
Tell us how you got the job at Power 96.
Wow…I was working at a club one day, and the Program Director-Kid Curry walked into the club, and we were doing a live broadcast at Mad Jacks in Miami Lakes (that’s how long ago it was). I was DJing before he started and he actually asked the owner who is this guy we want to bring him to Power, so the next day we sat down and he gave me an offer. He wanted me to DJ, and I started to be a DJ here. I was just a DJ for five years and the past two years they put me on the air finally.
Do you still do clubs?
Passion on Friday nights, and I do Bed on Saturday nights. Those are the only two nights I can do because of the radio.
So when can we catch you on Power 96?
SUNDAY, MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, 12 to 5:30am in the morning, and I’m on TV on Video Mix 4 to 6pm Wednesdays and Thursdays, so you can catch me doing the overnight show, that’s why they call me the “Overnight King”.
Da Overnight King, there you go, its 2:30 in da morning!
Its 2:30 a.m. in the morning, and I’m still grinding! People are still calling me. Yo, can you believe that?
Is there anyone that you would like to give shootouts to?
Big shootouts to 305hiphop.com for coming though and doing it big. Big shoot outs to my Power96 family, my Video Mix family, Rockafella crew, Fubu squad and everybody out there that has supported me for years, because I’ve (been) in Miami grinding for a long time.
It always pays off at the end.
This ain’t the end this is like 2006, it’s just going to go to another level. I’m going to follow Laz, Laz you heard that! I’m going to make that Laz money. I’m not going to do esa morena, but I’m going to do hip-hop.
Aight thank you baby.
I’m excited to see what he will bring to the table for 2006. From DJing, to Producing, to working on his new album, DJ Tony Tone definitely someone you would like to watch out for this year. Want to get at him? hit him up at
